PDP Leaders promised not impose Candidates - IBB

Former Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, says he is happy with the promise of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders that imposition of candidates would not be allowed in the party.

A statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, quoted Babangida as making the assertion in Minna, Niger State while receiving members of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) on Saturday.

Babangida receiving the PDP NWC led by its National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, also expressed satisfaction with the rebranding so far achieved by the party ahead of the 2019 general elections.

“I am happy at your assurances that there will be no imposition in all your primary elections. It is all about choice and you have promised to provide the best choice,” he is quoted as saying.

Commending the elective National Convention of the PDP, the former president noted that not a few Nigerians believed that the national convention would hold, but, however, the outcome was successful.

“Your ‘reposition, rebrand and regain’ agenda is working and I mean particularly the rebranding.

“Some people believed that having been in government since 1999, the PDP will find opposition difficult, but you are carrying on well and providing a better alternative.

“You have also not abandoned the people in times of crisis.

“I monitored your activities in Benue, Taraba and you just said your party has sent members to Zamfara to commiserate with the people.

“Surely you have made the people the centre of your return and they will not forget you because you were with them in time of sorrow,” Babangida is quoted as saying.

The statement also quoted Secondus, while speaking earlier, telling Babangida that Nigeria’s former leaders must rally together to save the nation from the current situation.

Secondus lamented the killings and economic hardships which Nigerians contend with on daily basis, and the level of division in the country.

“As a leader, you made the welfare of Nigerians the thrust of governance.

“You were also concerned about the peace and unity of this nation. You created and built people as well as institutions.

“Today, our nation is drifting and as leaders you cannot afford to keep quiet and watch on the sides.

“Leaders like you must come together and take a firm position on how to save our nation from the precipice,” he said.

The national chairman said that the PDP remained the only alternative platform based on its experience, and because it had learnt it lessons.

Secondus said that PDP leaders had resolved to play by the rules and operate within the confines of the party’s and the Nigerian constitution.

“We are rebranding and repositioning to make our party open to all and regain the land for the people.

“We are determined to give opportunities to the youths and our women.

“We also want to mentor a new generation of young Nigerians that will take our nation to the next millennium,” Secondus is quoted as saying.

He urged all Nigerians to rally with the repositioned PDP to restore the nation once more to the path of peace, national unity and economic prosperity.

Buhari Will Continue To Receive Different Groups And Organisations - Rep

Muhammadu Buhari is set to meet Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other leaders of the All Progressives Congress at his country home in Daura, Katsina state today, a day after he received the party’s governors.

We have reliably gathered that the APC leadership and top chieftains of the party would be converging in Daura to commiserate with the President who recently lost two members of his extended family.

Reports have it that the second meeting of Tinubu with the president in Daura on Saturday might go beyond mere condolence visit.

“Look, in the next few weeks and months the president will continue to receive different groups and organisations whose sole aim is to put much pressure on him to declare his intention for re-election in 2019.

“So, those Nigerians calling on him to seek reelection would continue to seek audience with the president with hope that he will finally agree with them to sustain continuity in APC-led administration, come 2019,’’ the source said.

‘Magic Snake’ Allegedly Swallows N36m Cash From JAMB office

A suspicious story has emerged from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, (JAMB) in Makurdi, the Benue State capital. A mysterious snake allegedly snuck into the accounts office of JAMB, and escaped with N36 million cash.
The JAMB office initially sold scratch cards from their offices and other designated centers, which students would use to login to the Board’s website for registration or checking admission status. However new reforms by JAMB registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, ended the use of scratch cards.
A team of auditors was hired and sent to different state offices of JAMB to take stock of the sold and unsold scratch cards. Their secondary duty was to obtain monies that were made or mismanaged during the period of the sale of scratch cards.
Philomina Chieshe, a sales clerk in the Makurdi office of JAMB, told the JAMB registrar and his team upon arrival that she did not know where the N36 million she made in previous years had gone.
During interrogation, Philomena yielded the information that her housemaid conniving with Joan Asen, a JAMB staff, had “spiritually” stolen the money from the vault in the accounts office.
“I was one of the four sales clerks attached to JAMB office in Makurdi. My responsibility was to sell scratch cards to candidates and was not involved in handling the revenues. It was the responsibility of Joan Asen and my other senior colleagues. I only remit money when i’m done selling the cards.
“A few months ago, there was issue of fraud in the Makurdi office. Auditors were sent from Abuja to carefully flip the record books of the office, to perhaps, ascertain the current state of affairs.
“The state Coordinator, Obilo, was not around when the audit team came. But in the course of the audit, N36 million was discovered to have been missing from the account. An investigation was launched. In the course of the investigation, it was discovered that Joan Asen, who is account staff and a lady outside JAMB have connived to steal the money.”
Philomina confessed in a statement that Joan Asen and her accomplices confessed they had been stealing the money through the use of a “spiritual” snake that would slither into the office and swallow the money from the vault before slithering out.
“It was a mystery to me too. I have been saving the money in the bank, but I found it difficult to account for it. So I started saving it in a vault in the office. But each time I open the vault, I will find nothing. I became worried and surprised how the millions of Naira could be disappearing from the vault. I began to interrogate everybody in the house and office, and no one could agree on what might have happened to the money. I continued to press until my housemaid confessed. She said that the money disappeared “spiritually”. She said that a “mysterious snake” sneaked into the house and swallowed the money in the vault.”

EFCC opposes bid by ex-minister, senator to quash money laundering charge

THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday urged the Federal High Court in Lagos not to grant an application by Senator Ayo Adeseun challenging the court’s jurisdiction to try him for money laundering.
The commission charged Adeseun along with a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Jumoke Akinjide, for allegedly laundering N650 million.
Also named in the charge are Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart Chief Olanrewaju Otiti and former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, who was said to be at large.
Adeseun, through his lawyer Michael Lana, filed two applications, both of which were adopted by Akinjide and Otiti.
In the first one, the defendants are praying Justice Muslim Hassan to strike out the charge because it was not properly served on them as provided in the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015.
Lana said Section 382 (2) of ACJA provides that the court shall within 10 working days of assignment of a case “issue notice of trial to the witnesses and defendants…”
According to him, the EFCC did not comply with the provision as it was prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, who personally served the defendants with the charge.
“The charge had the endorsement of the prosecuting counsel and he undertook to serve. The fact that the defendants are in court does not cure the non-service of the charge. Our objection is on non-compliance, not the validity of the charge. Once there’s no service before an arraignment, everything collapses. We have not been served,” he said.
On the fact that the court issued a hearing notice, the lawyer said the ACJA does not make provision for substituted service.
“It is the court that is to serve the charge on the defendants, not the prosecutor, who is an interested party. The registrar of the court must issue the notice and serve it either through the police or the bailiff,” he said.
Akinjide’s lawyer Chief Bolaji Ayorinde (SAN) agreed with Lana’s submissions, adding that the procedure adopted by EFCC in serving the charge was “incompetent”, therefore, “the charge should be struck out”.
Otiti’s lawyer Akinola Oladeji said the EFCC counsel “personally handed over the charge to the defendants,” adding that “it was not his (Oyedepo’s) business to do so”.
He insisted that “the procedure in the law was not followed”.
In the second application, Adeseun is praying the court to decline jurisdiction because the charge does not fall under issues over which the court can adjudicate on as provided in the constitution.
But, Oyedepo urged the court to dismiss the applications.
On the issue of non-service, the EFCC lawyer said the judge directed that notices be issued, adding that with the defendants’ arraignment, the application had become an academic exercise.
“The essence of the notice is to ensure that parties are made aware of the charge. The defendants are here (in court), meaning they have been notified,” he said.
On the issue of jurisdiction, Oyedepo said EFCC would prove during trial that the laundered money came from agencies over which the court has jurisdiction.
EFCC accused the defendants of conspiring to obtain the N650 million from Mrs. Alison-Madueke, in the build-up to the 2015 general elections.
The prosecution said they reasonably ought to have known “that the money formed part of the proceeds of an unlawful act”.
The defendants pleaded not guilty. Their trial will resume today

Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro Female student killed, private parts, heart removed

A female student at the Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro, simply identified as Happiness, has been reportedly found dead with her private and other vital body parts removed by suspected assassins.
The student, who was said to be a fresher, was declared missing on January 25th.
She reportedly left her hostel to celebrate her birthday with some male friends at a popular bar in Ozoro, the administrative headquarters of Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State.
It was gathered that the deceased left her apartment that Thursday with only her mobile phone, saying she would return immediately after the birthday party.
However, after the party, she was said to have followed some male friends alleged to be ‘Yahoo Boys’ to Oleh.
A source who claimed to be a friend of Happiness’ roommate told newsmen on Monday that when contacted on phone on the evening of the incident, Happiness had assured her roommate that she would soon return, but she did not, eventually.
The Science and Laboratory Technology National Diploma I student was said to be dating one of the ‘Yahoo Boys’ who took her to Oleh where she was believed to have met her death.
It was gathered on Monday that Happiness’ body was later discovered in an open space close to a secondary school along the Owhelogbo road in Ozoro, with one of her breasts, eyes, heart and private part removed by her killers.

Said the source, “Her roommate called repeatedly at about 9pm, but her number didn’t connect. It was the same thing the following day.
“It was at this point the roommate raised the alarm that Happiness was missing.
“Family members and friends have been searching for her until last Friday when her mutilated body was found along the Owhelogbo road.”
A hostel mate, who also confirmed the incident, said Happiness’ roommate has since been arrested by men of the Delta State Police Command for interrogation.
It was gathered that the corpse of the late student has been deposited in one of the morgues in the area.
The Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr. Boniface Ogarayan, could not be reached for clarification, as his two telephone lines were said to be out of network coverage.
Also, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Aniamaka, when reached for confirmation, said he had yet to be briefed as at the time of filing this report

Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni calls religious leaders ‘traitors’ in New Year’s message

Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni calls religious leaders ‘traitors’ in New Year’s message

In a message that Ugandan media houses were compelled to broadcast, President Yoweri Museveni blasted religious leaders who criticised the age limit constitutional amendment.
The Ugandan parliament recently amended the constitution removing age limits for presidential candidates, extending the term of elected officers of government from 5 to 7 years and restoring presidential term limits.
The amendment was very controversial, sparking off numerous physical fights in parliament, protests on the street and condemnation from religious leaders.
In his end of year message to the country, President Museveni accused religious leaders of pushing the agenda of foreign forces striving to meddle into the affairs of Uganda.
According to the president, these church leaders ought to have talked more about what he calls the “the strategic goals of our dear Africa.”
The five strategic goals set by past African leaders, he says, included regaining independence; attaining democracy; working for the prosperity; guaranteeing our strategic security through the political integration of as much of Africa as possible in the form of political federations like the East African Federation; and guaranteeing the survival of our identity as Black People without losing our languages, culture, customs, foods etc., to avoid becoming Black Europeans.
“To some of those elements, the five strategic goals do not exist. What, apparently, matters to them is political power for the political groups they fancy,” charged the president.
‘‘Instead of working for the independence of Africa, they are always in cahoots with foreigners – encouraging the latter to meddle in our affairs.’‘
The president went ahead to call religious leaders out on what he called ‘arrogance’ bordering on ‘betrayal’.
“This is assuming they do not have evil intentions which would be worse. That would make them into the Kayaffas, the Chief Priest that betrayed Jesus.”
His inspiration from the bible was also extended to the 317 members of parliament who voted in favor of lifting the age limit.
“Remember what Jesus said in Matthew Chapter 5 Verses 11-12. It says: “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for my sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets that were before you”.
“Therefore, NRM cadres and all patriots; false accusations are nothing for we transcended the firing squads of Idi Amin, the extra-judicial killings, the imprisonments, the losing of comrades in battles, etc.”
The message was derided on social media by Ugandans who had already expressed shock that all media houses in the country had to broadcast the president’s address.

“Go to school; when I got married, I just finished my secondary school education but I furthered my education” – First Lady Aisha Buhari

“Go to school; when I got married, I just finished my secondary school education but I furthered my education” – First Lady Aisha Buhari

First Lady Aisha Buhari
The Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari has challenged women and youths in Bauchi State to strive hard to acquire knowledge so that they can benefit from opportunities that may come their way.
Aisha Buhari Says
She stated this at the closing ceremony of the Skills Acquisition and Empowerment Training Programme initiated and sponsored by her pet project, Future Assured, which took place on Thursday at the Multipurpose Indoor Sports Hall, in Bauchi.
According to her, since most things are becoming digitalised, there is the need for the women and youths to be literate if they must benefit from various opportunities.
The President’s wife cited herself as an example to encourage women and children, pointing out to them that it was after her marriage that she went back to school.

She said:
“You know, when I got married, I just finished my secondary school education. I didn’t think my husband will be President again, but I still continued with my education and this is where God has brought me to today.
“I want to call on our people with a strong voice, education has become a compulsory thing that we must acquire.
“We must understand English and know how to speak it so that when any intervention comes, we will benefit from it. So, please, for God’s sake, people should continue to go to school even if you will not work in an office and earn money, but, so that, when opportunities come up tomorrow, you will not be left out.
“So, nobody should relent or give up in going to school to acquire knowledge. We should keep reading and schooling for the benefit of the society.”
